• on desktop we use network manager in menu
  • on server we must use config files:
    • /etc/network/interfaces – config of primary network interface, loopback etc.
      default:

      #loopback
      auto lo eth0
      iface lo inet loopback

      #primary
      iface eth0 inet dhcp

      static:

      #loopback
      auto lo eth0
      iface lo inet loopback

      #primary
      iface eth0 inet static
      address xx.xx.xx.xx
      netmask 255.255.255.0
      gateway xx.xx.xx.xx
      dns-nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
dns-search xxxxxxxx.xxx #default search domain if I enter single hostname

    • /etc/resolv.conf
      • in most distros here I put manually nameserver information
      • Ubuntu put it here automatically and overwrites existing content (done by “resolvconf” daemon)

commands:

  • ifconfig – shows network interfaces
